If your little ones are anything like I was, after-school snacks are an important bridge between my way-too-early lunch and dinner. Moms and dads, you need to make sure those snacks are as nutritious as possible. (In other words, no refined carbs, and limit the amount of sugar and fat.) To give you a helping hand, we’ve complied five favorite whole-grain snacks that should keep tummies full and happy until time for the family dinner (which will also be filled with whole grains, right?).
Coconut, Almond, and Goji Bars – These homemade fruit-filled, nutty-flavored bars are perfect for an after-school snack. Make a batch on Sunday, and then individually wrap, label, and stash in a basket or drawer at kid level.
Nutty Whole-Grain Granola – This granola is fantastic on its own, but also lends that perfect bite to our Quinoa-Granola Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Caramel Popcorn – Sure, this may seem indulgent, but if you’re going to treat your kids (maybe after they totally ace their spelling test?), you should do so in a wholesome way. Popcorn is a whole grain, so toss the popped kernels in a bit of sappy caramel for a sweet treat.
Alaska Molasses Cookies – Molasses cookies deliver a punch of flavor thanks to a slew of spices (ginger, cinnamon, and cloves).
Chewy Oat and Fruit Granola Bars – Toasting the oats, coconut, sunflower seeds, and flaxseed adds a rich, nutty taste to these granola bars. (Bonus: they’re gluten-free!) Store them in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
