5 Ways to “Halloween” Your Look if You’re Sans Costume

Despite my rabid love for all things Halloween and fall, I don’t like to dress up. Why? Because the first time I did (E.T., 1983) and the last time I did (Minnie Mouse, 2013), I felt awkward and out of place and put upon. I’m more of a wallflower when it comes to the holiday, I’ll confess.

Before I start to sound like the Grinch Who Stole Halloween, let me say that I love to take my normal hair and makeup looks and play around and have some fun. Perhaps you do, too. If you find yourself low on time or creativity (or a fellow wallflower) as the big day approaches, here are some easy ways to Halloween-ify your look.

  1. False eyelashes: You can go for a range of looks here, from just a notch above your everyday look (MAC makes a great, wide range of lengths and types) to super dramatic and funky-fresh, like these from Make Up For Ever.
  2. The author, 2013. A word of advice: never show up to a hipster Halloween event that does not indicate people will be wearing costumes. You'll be the only one dressed up.

Something for your hair: Sure, grab a quick and easy wig from Target, or you can dress up your ‘do with a temporary spray-in hair color that washes out after one shampoo, like Bumble and Bumble’s Spraychalks, available in blue, green, purple, and pink.

  3. A Halloween-inspired nail polish: I love this one from Urban Decay. Or try out Sally Hansen’s nail stickers (I like “Lacey Does It” for Halloween).
  4. A notice-me eyeshadow: Stila makes a line that mimics a foil-like look. Or here’s a budget-friendly option from NYX.
  5. As for the rest of you, try a simple black tunic with fun leggings, like these Day of the Dead inspired pair. Or a black skirt and fun pair of tights, like one of these striped pairs.

What will you be rocking this Halloween?
