Recently in the test kitchen, we all blew our diets one afternoon by tasting a variety of the latest flavors from some of America’s top premium national ice cream and gelato brands (Häagen-Dazs, Talenti, Ben & Jerry’s, etc.). Given that there were a dozen or so folks–all with their personal preferences– and about 25-30 flavors, you’d think it would be difficult for a clear winner to emerge.
It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it.
But the Ginger Molasses Cookie flavor from Häagen-Dazs’s new Artisan Collection rose to the occasion. Discounting the sheer ridiculousness of seeing the word “artisan” on a national brand–let’s face it, this is about as artisanal as a Chevrolet–this is a very real and profound reason to let yourself splurge. Its creamy milk (not vanilla) flavored base is abundantly studded with both chewy and crispy bits of molasses cookie from The Good Batch bakery in (where else?) Brooklyn, NY. The ice cream to morsel ratio is perfect, and a spoonful evokes memories of the best milk & cookies experience.
