Scents to Remember Summer By

Scented candles—and all fragrances for that matter—are one of the easiest ways to connect with a memory and recall its joy for even a fleeting moment. As the end of summer approaches, I’ve collected a few of my favorite summer-food-inspired scents so you can keep the beauty of summer lingering in your home just a bit longer.

Mint is mostly evergreen in home fragrances—you’ll see a lot of it around the holidays—but Capri Blue’s Modern Mint is much fresher, cleaner, and crisper. The way a bucket of mint in your backyard might smell after a light rain. The hint of green tea grounds the spearmint and sweet mint flavors for a very earthy, very natural herb experience.

Flash back with me, if you will, to that first scent of summer, whether you experienced that at a local farmers’ market or your own backyard. Its crisp, refreshing bite can be experienced again with Paddywax’s Basil and Cucumber. Hand-poured in the USA, this candle’s scent is sweet like basil with a clean, cooling hit of cucumber.

Stone fruits, like plums, apricots, and peaches, can really only be experienced at their finest for a brief window in the summer. Sure, you can buy some imported varieties, but we all know that juicy, ripe fruit is really only best during summer. Let that experience last you into the fall and winter with Thymes’ Mirabelle Plum fragrances. The plum notes are bright and ringing, and they’re grounded by subtle sandalwood hints and delicate peony scents.

illume-coconut-milk-mango

I call this line of beauty and home products “vacation to go.” Its name, Coconut Milk Mango, should tell you this tropical scent will serve as an escape when you most need it, whether that’s every shower, or just an occasional luxurious bubble bath. The coconut notes are smooth, luscious, and creamy. The mango and papaya brighten and refresh the whole fragrance experience. A hint of vanilla and sugar seals the deal: Illume has made one divine fragrance experience.

produce-candles-peach

The first time I experienced this candle, I was in Atlanta in the middle of a very hot weekend. I lifted the candle, took off the lid, and inhaled. Instantly I was transported to lower Alabama, to the peach tree orchards that churn out the country’s most delicious peaches. Produce Candles somehow manages to capture the very essence of life from each fruit, vegetable, or herb they decide to honor with their candle. The Peach scent is available only for a short window, so don’t miss it. And if you’re know someone who loves summer tomatoes but loathes them in any other season, wait until they smell the Tomato variety.
